Voicemail by text and robo-call blocker are just a few of the features available on the Time Warner Cable home phone service. In this week’s Unscrambled report, Jill Urban looks at some phone options you may not realize are available.

When most people think of home phone service, many just think of a landline with voicemail and maybe a few simple features like call forwarding. But the Time Warner Cable phone service actually offers a lot more than that.

"Time Warner Cable has a portal to allow you to manage all your phone services and that is called Voice Zone. So you can go to Voice Zone and look at your call history, set any aspect of your services, your voicemail, the number of rings, you can set distinctive rings for certain callers and you can set any of our privacy features," explains Jeffrey Lindsay, GVP/GM Phone, Time Warner Cable.

And on the Voice Zone portal there are a lot of privacy features you may not be aware of. For example, Call Blocker and Call Blocker Plus allow you to block specific numbers you choose, private calls, or spoofed calls – which are calls that look like they are coming from another number. This is a common trick for telemarketers. You can set your options to either transfer those calls directly to voicemail, or have a special message generated that notifies the caller that the number is blocked.

Another feature called Nomorobo will help put an end to those robo-calls.

"The way Nomorobo works is it has a list of known telemarketers and robo callers, and if a call comes in from one of these it will block it after one ring and it will answer it at their service center. It will say, for example, 'Hello, are you a robot?' Of course a robo caller can’t get past that point. Now, should it be the case that the call is valid, then Nomorobo will allow it to connect the next time," says Lindsay.

Voicemail is another service that offers a lot of options.

"Our voicemail will allow you to send voicemail to email. It will transcribe the voicemail for you. You can listen to your messages using a computer. It will send you an SMS notification that you have a voicemail or it will even transcribe the voicemail and send it to you as a message," says Lindsay.

And nowadays you don’t even need a phone to have a home phone. The VoiceZone Connect software allows you to use your phone service right from your desktop, and the Phone2Go app allows you to use your service on a mobile device or tablet. To check out the phone features you can log into voicezone.timewarnercable.com, so now you can make the call on how and where to use your phone service.
