ALBANY, N.Y. -- Earlier this morning, the State Assembly gave its final approval requiring schools to test for lead contamination in their drinking water.

This now goes to Gov.Andrew Cuomo to be signed into law.

Schools on municipal water do not currently have to test for lead contamination.

Under this legislation, schools will have to test for lead, inform parents and teachers of the results.

State funds will be provided for testing and remediation and the State Department of Health will have to create an annual report based on these tests.

Well water schools, like two in Ithaca that tested high for lead, are already required to test every three years. So this does not impact them.
