Local residents joined dozens of Verizon workers this week protesting for better pay and benefits.

Thursday's strike was part of an organized community day of action planned for the same day as Verizon's share-holders meeting.

Hundreds of protests took place around the country.

Members of CWA Local 1102, other professional unions, and civic groups protested outside a Verizon Wireless store on Richmond Avenue.

Verizon union workers say all they want is a fair contract, better daily working conditions, and more transparency into executive decision making.

"This fight is less about wages, less about those benefit issues and more about securing good jobs for the community," said Steven Lawton, the President of CWA Local 1102.

"Verizon sends their literature of what they're offering us, but when you read the real facts you do find out that they're leaving a lot of stuff out," said Christine Cannavale, a Verizon Field Technician.

In a statement Ray McConville with Verizon's Corporate Media Relations said, "Our employees need to start asking union leaders why they continue to stage circus-like street rallies rather than engage in meaningful negotiations at the bargaining table.   Each day union leaders stage these meaningless rallies is another day lost at the bargaining table and another day of lost wages for our employees.

Verizon has put an excellent offer on the table that includes a 7.5 percent wage increase, continued job security protection, outstanding retirement and healthcare benefits.  It’s time for Union leaders to get serious of bargaining and put the needs of our employees first rather than their personal, misguided agenda."
