WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. -- A trip to Napa Valley a few years ago gave Kenny May an idea for a business -- one that seemed common in California, but that was lacking in the Finger Lakes: wine lockers, to help both tourists and locals store their wine.

"All of us have been on a wine tour. And you have to carry your bottle from the winery into your car," said May, the owner of Finger Lakes Wine Lockers. "They take a whole bunch of room up in your car. And then you have to carry them from the car into your house, and you don't ever have room for all the wine that you've bought."

May's solution is simple. All you have to do is purchase your wine and leave it at the winery.

"We'll pick it all up for you at the wineries, and we'll either bring it to your hotel or bring it to your house if you're a local. Or if you have a locker here, we'll store it right here for however long you're here," explained May.

The wine is kept in temperature-controlled conditions to make sure the wine won't ever spoil.

"We went to Wine Cellar Innovations in California and ordered an air conditioner for this room that is specific for keeping the correct humidity and keeping the room at 55 degrees, so your wine ages at the perfect rate," May said.

Chamber of Commerce officials say the business fits right in with the local wine industry, and that it's a good idea for complementing businesses to promote one another.

"That's what great about Schuyler County, that there's so many interconnecting businesses from wineries to restaurants to breweries to transportation companies to hotels and [bed and breakfasts]. The list goes on," said Brittany Gibbs, tourism and marketing manager at the Watkins Glen Chamber of Commerce. "Everybody is really closely tied, and when one succeeds, we all succeed."

The idea of wine lockers is new for the Finger Lakes, and the goal right now is to make sure tourists and locals know they have this option.

"One of the neat things about it is that it's so unknown, and it's such a new idea that once people learn about it and know more, it's just going to take off," Gibbs said.

Finger Lakes Wine Lockers is also branching into the cigar world. The businesses is working with local wineries to infuse their wines into cigars, so tourists can taste their wine in more than one way.
