CARY - Name by name, just as they were known.

The names of victims on American Eagle Flights 3378 and 3379 were remembered Saturday at the somber opening of a new memorial at Carpenter Park in Cary.

With flights taking off from nearby Raleigh-Durham International Airport, the irony showed itself in the skies while family, friends, and first responders honored those lost in two plane crashes, one in 1988 and the other in 1994.

Dee Sherrow worked for American Eagle at RDU in 1988.  He was on a flight behind Flight 3378 on the runway, when 3378 took off and crashed.  He soon learned something had happened.

That's why so many people gathered at this new memorial Saturday because it was their brother, sister, son, daughter, loved ones, gone tragically.

Sherrow finds comfort in the fact that years later, everyone has returned to pay respects.

Like wings on angels, released butterflies signified those lost.
