NORTH CAROLINA -- On Wednesday, schools across the state participated in an annual tornado drill.

During the drill, a warning was issued and students had to take shelter right away.

Officials say it’s most important to stay away from windows and move to the center of the structure you’re in like a hallway or closet.  They also say it’s important to protect yourself from flying debris which can quickly turn into a deadly situation.

“You want to know what to do when that warning is issued. Don't delay when you hear a tornado warning issued or a severe thunderstorm warning issued.  Every second counts, so you should never wait to take action,” said Nick Petro from the National Weather Service in Raleigh.

The drill was part of North Carolina’s Severe Weather Preparedness Week to encourage people to have a plan in place for the severe weather season ahead.

The deadliest months for tornadoes in North Carolina are March, April and November.
