GREENSBORO -- A well-known downtown developer moved one step closer to building Greensboro's tallest tower.
Roy Carroll purchased property near the Grasshoppers Stadium for his new Project 561 building; named for its height of 561 feet.
"We see this whole area in the northwest side of our downtown as really where I think you're going to experience the next building boom," said Carroll.
It's a boom he plans to be a part of. His goal is to create not only the city's biggest building, but one of the largest ones in the state.
"Outside of Charlotte this would be the tallest building in North Carolina," said Carroll.
The skyscraper is projected to feature office space, a hotel and possible retail, but Carroll said the project is not a done deal.
"We're hopeful that there's going to be a tenant, a key anchor tenant, that sees the value in being in a downtown such as Greensboro that's undergoing revitalization," said Carroll.
Downtown leader Zack Matheny said the city's revitalization has been a long time coming.
"We're finally here, Greensboro is growing up," said Matheny.
In part, because of investors like Carroll.
"Roy is a visionary,” said Matheny. “He's made investments in this community that are substantial."
Just around the corner from the hopeful Project 561 building, Carroll has construction underway on an upscale hotel/apartment site situated in what he calls the perfect location.
"We absolutely wouldn't be involved in Carroll at Bellemeade if it weren't sandwiched between the ballpark and the performing arts center,” said Carroll. "Those are really catalyst projects that are getting a lot of developers, like myself, excited about investing in downtown Greensboro."
There's no timeline for Project 561, but Carroll said he's talked with several potential tenants.
