GREENSBORO -- Several new and revamped restaurants are in the works for PTI Airport, and the company that will soon be managing food operations there is looking for about 70 new workers.

PTI passenger Jimmy Joyner was in a rush to catch a Wednesday afternoon flight, but his quest for food slowed him down.

"There's only a couple of places really, so if you're in a hurry to sort of grab something, you're sort of out of luck because they have to take time for preparation,” Joyner said.

He has identified a problem that will soon be addressed when HMSHost, a restaurateur, takes over food operations at the airport in about a month.

"We will take over the existing units, but then we will be starting construction immediately and we will be bringing new concepts,” said Fanny Morales, a human resources manager for the company.

Five new brands are slated to come, including Starbucks, a PGA-themed restaurant, and a Great American Bagel.

Kevin Baker, airport authority executive director, said the new offerings will cater to passengers who have long asked for a Starbucks, will give a nod to local attractions and ingredients, and will provide more grab-and-go options.

"This is just an obvious next step for us to improve and refresh our food offerings, to have something that is more modern, more of what people are looking for,” Baker said.

Baker added that several of the new spots will be past security checkpoints to provide more convenience for passengers, and that the new restaurants should open around year’s end.

Morales said HMSHost will also likely upgrade the airport’s existing restaurants once it assumes management over them. In order to accommodate all the planned changes, the company is looking to hire several workers.

"We will be hiring approximately 70 associates to operate our concepts, so that will be bringing jobs to our community,” she said. "We will be hiring everywhere from crew members, utility workers, shift supervisors, shift managers and other positions over here to fill in those gaps here."

HMSHost is holding a job fair on Thursday, March 31, to help identify potential hires. It will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the American Airlines baggage claim area at PTI.

As for Joyner, news of all the developments was just as welcome as the burger he waited for.

"I think that's a very positive move on their part,” he said. "Because everybody, when they come into the airport, is in a hurry. It's come in, grab something, and get out."
