GREENSBORO -- A Greensboro landmark will no longer bear the name of a white supremacist.
A UNCG trustee committee voted unanimously on Thursday to rename Aycock Auditorium.
"We understand it's a building, not a name" said Franklin D. Gilliam Jr., UNCG chancellor. "But it's more about the culture of the university that we're trying to create here and our core values of excellence, opportunity for all, tolerance and inclusion."
University historians say a group of alumni chose to name the building after Gov. Charles B. Aycock, who served from 1901 to 1905, because of his support of public education.
Historians say he also disenfranchised African American voters.
The university began looking into a name change at the end of 2014.
"It's something that I don't think we want to hold as the primary symbol on one of the most important buildings on this campus," Randall Kaplan said.
The university has no timeline for a new name or when the change will actually occur.
