GREENSBORO -- This winter's first snow storm took a toll on roads and highways across the state. Now that most of the wintry mix has melted away City of Greensboro Maintenance Crews are diligently working to repair damage caused by snowfall.

"Once the snow starts melting any cracks in the roadway lets the moisture penetrate, and what happens is the road actually goes through a freeze thaw cycle,” said Street Maintenance supervisor David Munoz. “Once that happens and cars and traffic start running over these areas that are weakened it creates potholes."

Munoz said potholes can cause big problems for drivers.

"If you hit a nice size pothole they can do undercarriage damage, they can do damage to your tires, and your rims," said Munoz.

This year's repair work is just getting started.

"We have repaired 632 potholes in 28 days, and that was before we had this winter weather,” said Munoz. “Last year we repaired close to 6,000 potholes."

If residents spot any potholes in their neighborhood they can report them to the contact center by calling 336-373-2489.

“We try to repair all potholes within 24-hour time frame and even though we are proactive about repairing potholes we could use the citizen's help as well," said Munoz.

Munoz said right now crews are cleaning equipment after all of the snow removal and they'll put a more precise pothole plan in place next week.

"Right now we're doing more so reactive stuff from citizen's complaints but next week we'll have a better plan in place," said Munoz.
