JONESVILLE -- The Jonesville Public Library has served the community for more than 60 years, but a mold problem has forced the library to close its doors and temporarily relocate.
It's been a grueling few months for Barbara Gilpin and the staff at the Jonesville Public Library. On Wednesday, the rains reminded Gilpin of the hardship after a water leak damaged the building back in May.
"It's laugh or cry almost,” said Gilpin.
It caused hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage. Mold began growing in the building, and even the books that were once filled with knowledge and stories are now filled with mold.
"When we started checking books, there were actual mushrooms and mold growing in between pages."
The staff and volunteers have had to comb through all 19,500 books to see if any can be salvaged. More than 10,000 books have been thrown out so far in the last two months.
"Over $150,000,” said Gilpin. “That's books alone."
The branch librarian said they’re seeking donations right now such as money, furniture and of course, books.
"We have a place until May 13. But after that we don't know,” said Gilpin.
Hugh Chatham Urgent Care has allowed them to use their empty building rent free for six months. The library and its resources like the free computer lab and children's program will be shut down until all the books have been checked and the temporary building is up and running.
