GREENSBORO -- Greensboro’s only makerspace, a place where really anyone can come and try their shot at making really anything, is expanding.

It's moving from the current 3,600 square foot building to a nearly 7,000 square foot space down the street.

"We were out of room there for all of the equipment that we want to add and also equipment that people want to donate,” said developer Andy Zimmerman. “We just didn't have room in the other shop. Our capabilities are going to be much greater than they were in the smaller space."

With more space comes more amenities.

"We want to add a lot of classes to the agenda here,” said Zimmerman. “It's going to add a lot of value. We can teach 3D printing. We've had a welding class, but we've had to do it outside of The Forge before, and now we can do it in here."

They will also share the space with UNCG’s art department.

“To have a gallery here, so there's going to be a lot of synergy between UNCG and The Forge as well an organization called, 'SALT,' which is Student Art League of the Triad," said Zimmerman.

As for the old space, The Greensboro Distillery will be moving into it.

However, not only is The Forge getting an overhaul, so is the entire street it sits on. Zimmerman has big ideas for the Lotus Lounge , a former nightclub that sits across the street from The Forge.

"[I’m thinking] a little grill, a little bistro or a little general store along with the grocery store,” said Zimmerman. “I want to bring a music venue to this area. We don't have enough live music. I am also in pretty serious talks with someone who wants to open a restaurant and wine bar."

Zimmerman said there's lots of options, but he’s not going to rush into anything.

“I want the right fit for the building and for Lewis Street,” said Zimmerman.

Joe Rotondi, the executive director of The Forge, said, "It's really exciting for downtown to have this area kind of revitalized."

Right now, The Forge has just over 150 members. Its new space should open in April.
