CHAPEL HILL -- An Elon University football player died on Wednesday after falling from a dorm on the campus of UNC.

According to a police report, the death was a suicide.

Cornelius native Demitri Allison reportedly left the Elon University campus on Tuesday. Friends and teammates alerted police to search for him, as they were concerned about his wellbeing.

Coaches told Elon officials that Allison had missed practice earlier in the week, as well as other engagements. It was later that UNC Chapel Hill police were asked to also do a wellness check.

Allison fell from Morrison Residence Hall, a 10-story building at the UNC. He was a junior at Elon.

"We just heard a crash and then a girl yelling. We ran outside and saw a bunch of police officers running around," said student Niko Krachenfels, who lives at Morrison Hall.

Both Elon and UNC have grief counselors on hand.

Elon University also held a “Gathering of Friends” ceremony on Thursday at Rhodes Stadium. Hundreds gathered to share their feelings of loss and reflect on memories and moments with Demitri.
