GREENSBORO—Halloween is about a month away, and that means the freaky festivities can begin!

One of the top attractions in the country is right here in the North Carolina.

Woods of Terror has been named the top haunted house in the country by "Haunted Attraction Magazine."

"I started this in 1991 with three friends,” said owner Eddie McLaurin. “I never knew it was going to be this big. I just knew I would do anything to make it the biggest and best I could."

McLaurin says it's more than just a haunted attraction.

"It's more about the theatrical production for me,” McLaurin said. “We have some great actors, and they really bring the show to life.

The event gets bigger, better, and scarier every year. There are 175 staff members that make this possible.

Experts say the adrenaline rush people get from things like this is what keeps them coming back.

"For people that enjoy the thrill of being scared, it's just that, it's an adrenaline rush,” said Heather Willard, psycology instructor at Surry Community College. “The chemicals released by our brains are the equivalent of a runner's high."

There's also a psychological feeling of accomplishment.

"When we make it to the end of a haunted house, trail, or scary movie, there's a sense of accomplishment that produces a higher level of self esteem,” Willard said.

Woods of Terror Is open Thursdays through Sundays.
