MORGANTON, N.C. -- The town of Morganton says says the owners of Tyra, an African Serval cat, are breaking the law by keeping her.

Tyra's owners say they raised her since she was a kitten, and add she's declawed, domesticated and definitely not dangerous.

While serval cats are legal to keep in the state and Burke County, the town has an ordinance barring exotic-type animals. The mayor of Morganton says he wants to change the ordinance to bar dangerous exotic animals, but that help may not come soon enough for the family.

A letter from the town said Tyra has to be rehomed outside the town by Sept. 28 or the family could face consequences.
