FORSYTH COUNTY, N.C. -- A pit bull mix is in the care of Forsyth County Animal Control after neighbors took action to care for it.
Several senior citizens living in the Winston-Salem neighborhood fed and gave water to the dog for a week while animal control conducted its investigation.
Officers said if you suspect an animal is abandoned, the first thing you should do is make an attempt to contact the owner.
If that doesn't work, call police.
"You can report to your local police departments, animal control department, and someone will go by and make an initial assessment of the situation. We discourage people going onto other people's property,” said Tim Jennings, Animal Control.
Jennings said Forsyth County saw more than 260 reports of abandoned animals in 2014.
In 2015, there has been 115.
