RANDOLPH COUNTY—The Grubb YMCA in Archdale offers children a new way to cool down this summer.

A ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday officially opened the Stout Splash Pad that cost $310,000 to build. Darrell Stout and his wife, Mary Jo, donated most of the money in memory of their daughter Cristie Stout Lewis who died in 2011.

“We're very happy with it. She liked children, she always wanted to be with children and maybe children will grow up to be a little bit better,” said Darrell Stout.

YMCA leaders said they want the water park to become a gathering spot for the community.

"It provides us an opportunity to connect to families, it provides us an opportunity to connect to more children. It provides us an opportunity to serve more groups, more churches, more youth groups other non-profits," said YMCA of High Point CEO David Ozmore.

YMCA members have free access to the splash pad. Guests pay $5 per visit.
