RALEIGH--When your vehicle registration is up, you'll now get one sticker for your plate, not two. DMV officials say the move will save the state money.
"This change was a piece of legislation that was passed into law, and basically we're trying to find ways to make better use of our money. We have more expenses, less money coming in, so we're looking for ways to save money, save the taxpayers money and get the same job done," said Steve Abbott, NCDOT spokesperson.
The new sticker will be grey and show the expiring month and year above the license plate number. The process of getting your new, single registration sticker will be the same as before.
"The process itself, the registration, it's the same thing whether you do it online which most people are starting to do or you do it in the office, you go through that process," said Abbott.
The new sticker will then be mailed to drivers who will then be responsible for changing the look of their license plate.
"The sticker up in the upper left corner which, right now is red and has the month of the registration, you're just peeling that off and putting your other sticker over the other ones in the right hand corner, you're done," said Abbott.
Having one registration sticker the same color is expected to save thousands each year.
"It's going to save the state about $70,000 a year just having the one sticker to put on the upper right hand corner of your plate," said Abbott.
There are no changes to the limited registration plate sticker design which is a temporary sticker issued by dealers to use until a vehicle is titled.
By next summer all vehicles should have the new grey sticker on the license plate.
