WHITSETT, N.C. — It’s a dream years in the making that's now a reality for adults with disabilities. Peacehaven Community Farm just opened its first on-site house, called Susan’s View, named after one of the co-founders.
When you visit Peacehaven farm, the name speaks for itself.
"It's 90 acres,” said executive director Buck Cochran. “It's set on the banks of Lake Mackintosh, so it's really this beautiful rolling central North Carolina farm. We love to get up walking, especially with our dog."
That dog is the farm's new unofficial mascot: a golden retriever named Maverick.
"He's a friendly and nice dog," said core member Anna Daniel.
He's a big part of their new home, Susan's View.
"We started seven years ago with the core mission of getting housing on the farm,” Cochran said. “It took us about a year to build using volunteers with the community."
"It's beautiful, and it's great," said core member Molly Barker.
Four core members live there, along with four assistants to help them.
"The folks who live here in the shared community with them help with with everything from meals, to exercise, to vocational opportunities and lots of learning and growth,” Cochran said. “Our core members are finding places where they can learn and grow and be supported in that effort."
"It's fun to do all that together, and have people you can live life with and do things together,” said resident assistant Laura Grier.
The goal here is to remove limitations on adults with disabilities and provide them with a unique purpose. Taking care of the chickens is a favorite chore for many.
"We have seven chickens and we all eat eggs!" said core member Jeff Piegari.
"The chickens give us eggs," said core member Jake Taylor.
The next step for leaders at Peacehaven is to build even more homes like this one, giving folks with disabilities an opportunity to live independently. It’s a place where love abounds, and everyone is special.
"I think that's the best thing in the world," Piegari said.
