GREENSBORO -- A discount clothing store is bringing a lot more than savings to North Carolina.

Gabe's is known for selling brand names at deep discounts. The company is opening new stores in Greensboro and Gastonia.

Gabe’s is holding job fairs all week to fill positions before the stores open in March.

In Greensboro, hundreds of people lined up at the job fair Monday.

"It's been a phenomenal turnout, more than we ever anticipated, so we're excited, and that just shows that the community is excited to get us here," said Gabe’s Greensboro location’s General Manager Sarah Underwood.

Gabe's is taking over the old Kmart building on Bridford parkway in Greensboro.

"There's a lot of jobs coming to the area, almost 200, and it's a very competitive business,” said job candidate Brandon Yates. “They're bringing low prices. It adds a little more competition to the market. It lowers the prices for everybody, so I think it's a good thing in general."

Underwood said customers can expect the same merchandise that the other stores carry, just more of it and more name brands to choose from.

The company, Gabriel Brothers, currently operates Rugged Wearhouse, just a few doors down from the new Greensboro Gabe’s location. When Gabe’s opens in March, the two stores will merge.

"It's going to help the economy out,” said Yates. “There's going to be a little bit more spending and more people working, so there's a general increase in the state of the economy."

Gabe's is hiring more than 100 people for each location.

"We're looking for just smiling faces, great personalities out here today,” said Underwood. “We're looking for cashiers all the way to maintenance for the store."

Managers said they are filling some of those positions on the spot.

The Greensboro job fair continues Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Managers at the Gastonia location will hold their job fair on Wednesday and Thursday. Both stores are set to open at the beginning of March. The grand opening is scheduled for March 7.
