Frank Morano, Staten Island’s newest City Council member, is outlining what's ahead after winning last week’s special election to represent the borough’s south shore in the 51st District.

The longtime radio host turned politician joined “Mornings On 1” Monday to reflect on his victory and discuss priorities as he fills the seat left vacant by fellow Republican Joe Borelli.

Morano, who hosted shows on AM 970 and 770 WABC before entering politics, said his background in radio prepared him well.

“In both cases, you're expected to know everything about everything,” Morano said. “A caller calls in and wants to know about tariffs or North Korea or pens or apples, you have to have an answer. A constituent has to ask you about why their block doesn't have a stop sign or policing, you have to have an answer for that.”

Morano, one of only a handful of Republicans in the overwhelmingly Democratic City Council, vowed to address everyday quality-of-life problems that he feels should not be partisan issues.

“As [Mayor Fiorello] LaGuardia used to say, there's no Republican or Democratic way to clean the street,” he said. “There's no Republican or Democratic way to fill a pothole or to get the streets cleaned when there's snow on the ground … that's ultimately what I think my constituents are most interested in — getting their fair share of city services efficiently, fairly.”

As for his top legislative goal, Morano said he is focused on blocking a planned four-story transient hotel in his district, calling the developer “very irresponsible” and saying the community fears it could become a homeless shelter.

“Killing that project and ideally facilitating the sale from this developer to a more responsible developer, that's my number one issue,” he said.
