It's a surgery that's taking medical advances to new heights. Novant Health Rowan Medical Center has been performing robotic assisted knee surgeries and one doctor believes this could be the surgery of the future.

Perry Hood is a 76 year-old North Carolina native who loves golf. After having knee surgery on his right knee just a few years ago, Hood was told he would have to have his other knee replaced.

Now, he's undergoing robotic partial knee replacement with Novant Health's Navio robotic assisted surgery. "I'm excited about that. I've had one six and a half years ago, and Doctor Comadoll considers that, that was the A-model Ford, and the one now he compares to a new Porsche. I'm looking forward to it; I had no problem with the other one. Thrilled that I'm here doing this with this group of people,” said Hood.

New year 2017 brought new technology to the surgery, when this past January, Novant Health got a second-generation robot.

"To compare the two is like comparing a dial phone to an iPhone, so the new technology allows us to use enhanced data in the operating room, to plan out a patient's partial knee replacement,” said Dr. Chip Comadoll of Novant Health.

This robotic surgery allows doctors to be precise when it comes to the operation. "It allows you to put the components in with precision. A first robot is kind of like using a rifle, shooting a target, this second generation robot is like using a high powered rifle with a scope to shoot the same target. So, you're able to really define a patient's anatomy and implant in precisely,” said Dr. Comadoll.

Robotic precision can be key to recovery and Dr. Comadoll believes this is the surgery of the future.

"I think that while orthopedic surgeons will be using this technology in almost every operative procedure they do, whether or not  it's knee reconstruction, you know sports medicine, hip replacement,  should replacement, everything I think we do will enhance itself with robotic technology,” said Dr. Comadoll.

Dr. Comadoll says starting next month, Novant Health will do total knee replacments using the same platform.
