Today's Big Stories
1. Trump threatens additional 50% tariff on China
President Donald Trump threatened China with an additional 50% tariff Monday, three days after Beijing said it would impose a 34% retaliatory tariff on U.S. exports to the country.
China said its 34% tariff was in response to the 34% reciprocal tariff that Trump plans to impose on China starting Wednesday.
2. Attorney says no drugs or alcohol in driver's system in deadly I-35 crash
The attorney for the truck driver arrested in the deadly 18-vehicle crash that left three adults and two children dead in March said there were no traces of drugs or alcohol in his system at the time of the crash.
The Austin Police Departmart confirmed their knowledge of the toxicology report.
3. Stocks making wild swings as markets try to assess potential damage from Trump's trade war
U.S. stocks are falling in a manic Monday after President Donald Trump doubled down on his tariffs, despite seeing how much financial markets would love to see him do the opposite.
The S&P 500 was down 1.4% in midday trading, coming off its worst week since COVID began crashing the global economy in March 2020. The index, which sits at the heart of many investors' 401(k) accounts, has lost nearly 20% since setting a record less than two months ago.
4. Jay North, TV's mischievous Dennis the Menace, dies at 73
North died Sunday at his home in Lake Butler, Florida, after battling colon cancer, said Laurie Jacobson, a longtime friend, and Bonnie Vent, who was his booking agent.
"He had a heart as big as a mountain, loved his friends deeply. He called us frequently and ended every conversation with 'I love you with all my heart,'" Jacobson wrote in a tribute on Facebook.
