GRAHAM—Why try to learn how to solve equations with a textbook when you can sing instead?

That’s exactly what Graham Middle School eighth graders are doing, creating a music video on how to solve an equation.

"We've done the traditional take the notes, and then following the steps and drill and kill of the practice problems,” said their teacher, Jason Slagle. “But we wanted our class to do something different."

It’s a memorable way to do math.

"It's a process you do, where you draw your line, box your variables, do the opposite operation and then you solve it,” said student Chasity Mendoza.

Students have also come up with a dance to help them learn and remember the process of solving simple and multi-step equations.

"This is easier for me, because I'm pretty sure we're going to have a test at the end of the unit—and all I have to do is think of the song in my head, and it will help me solve the equation,” said student Regine Apple.

Students are also sharing their love of STEM skills with their peers in the sixth grade, teaching them a similar song.

That tune is teaching students about prime numbers.

"Next week, we're going to have groups of students work with our STEM teacher to edit and use software and compile everything, and create a finished product of our video,” Slagle said.

He’s helping to turn a subject that can sometimes be difficult to learn into a fun and memorable experience.
