DALLAS — Southwest Airlines is looking to expand their international flights, according to an application filed with the U.S. Department of Transportation.
The Dallas-based airline filed for the approval from the U.S. DOT to fly in any country subject to the Open Skies agreement, which include, Europe, including the U.K., parts of Latin America, parts of Asia and Africa. If the application is approved, Southwest could expand its international travel options, which currently include some locations in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.
The Open Skies Agreements include hundreds of countries that remove restrictions on international air roues for airlines to operate more freely, according to the DOT.
The recent filing comes amid recent changes at Southwest, including their recent step back to offering two free checked bags and introducing assigned and premium seating options.
