NEW RICHMOND, Ohio — As communities along the Ohio River continue to deal with the impacts of flooding, we are also seeing neighbors helping neighbors as clean-up efforts begin.
The First Baptist Church of New Richmond looks a little different this week because it’s filled with cleaning supplies for residents and businesses alike who will be busy cleaning their homes and shops after this flood.
It’s been a long few days for the people of New Richmond as flood waters have completely taken over several blocks of the village near the Ohio River. As the water begins to recede, the clean-up efforts begin. That's why the church is taking in cleaning supplies and giving back to their neighbors.
“I’ve been around in this community for a really long time, been through multiple floods, tornadoes," Kristin Bennett, a church member, said. "So this community knows how to rally around each other and that’s what makes it. They always say that saying, be like a small town, and we exemplify that perfectly.”
Donations of bleach, mops, diapers and other cleaning and personal care supplies are being brought in in droves, thanks to local business owners, including one who owns the IGA in town. He said someone even donated $1,000 so they could donate even more.
“I mean they’re the reason we’re here," Lance Sizemore, the owner of the IGA and other businesses in town, said. "So they support us all year long, so we’re more than happy to support them when they need us.”
Supplies can be picked up or dropped off any day until Saturday from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m.
