Rochester Gas and Electric is warning customers of a potential scam involving the use of a phone number included on the company’s bills and website.

RG&E says it received reports that a number listed to help hearing-impaired customers was being used by a potential scammer.

The company is asking hearing-impaired customers who may need assistance to not use the previous number, (800) 962-3293.

RG&E says it has discontinued that number and replaced it with 711, which is the number for the New York Relay service.

“We want our customers to know that we are taking action and we are committed to securing their personal information,” Patricia Nilsen, president and CEO of RG&E and NYSEG, said in a statement.

RG&E says its documents, including bills, are being updated to reflect the updated phone number and says it is undergoing an audit of its customer service numbers for security purposes.
