WHITAKERS, N.C. (AP) — Sheriff’s deputies in Nash County are investigating a shooting that left a 17-year-old dead and a man injured early Sunday.

The Nash County Sheriff’s Office received a call about 1:30 a.m. Sunday reporting multiple shooters at a party at a home in the 3600 block of Lonesome Pine Road in Whitakers.

Melito Armstrong Jr. was shot in the chest and died. His mother confirmed to WRAL-TV that Armstrong had turned 17 in July.

Javine Rashunn Hinton, 27, went to the hospital with a gunshot wound, the sheriff's office stated in a social media post. Hinton was treated and released.

An altercation broke out as the party involving about 200 people was winding down, and shots were fired, the sheriff's office stated.

Deputies believe the shooting was not a random act and the shooters and victims knew each other.

Whitakers straddles the line between Nash and Edgecombe counties and is more than 60 miles northeast of Raleigh.
