Local school officials are asking the state to implement the CDC's new guidance for COVID-19 restrictions by ending the state's mask mandate in schools.

In a letter to Gov. Hochul, superintendents are seeking to get the mandate dropped for schools in counties identified by the CDC as medium or low risk.

They're also asking for the state to provide information to school staff and parents on what would cause the re-introduction of a mask mandate, and to provide them with guidance on changes to other mitigation efforts such as social distancing.

Officials from the Washington-Saratoga-Warren-Hamilton-Essex BOCES and the Hamilton-Fulton-Montgomery BOCES signed onto this letter.

The governor's office says state officials are still evaluating CDC guidance, and will provide an update on potential changes to state guidelines upon further review.
