Rhonda Steinel says she has to stop for every light when driving on Hancock Road.

“I don’t want to stop at every light,” said Steinel.

Driving between Florida’s Turnpike and State Road 50, Steinel says it seems like she has to stop at every traffic signal on Hancock Road.

“There’s so many different streets that cut through. The lights need to be timed better before you stop for everyone,” she said.

South of State Road 50, still heading on Hancock Road, Steinel runs into another problem, a roadblock.

She wants construction to wrap up so Hancock Road can connect down to Wellness Way and Seidel Road, making it easier to get to Orange County.

“My hope is that this will get extended so that my daughter and I can just get on this one road and safely travel back and forth and not be stuck on the turnpike or spending so much time and gas to see each other,” Steinel said.

Lake County’s engineering director said that Hancock Road extension won’t open to drivers until the summer of 2026.

In the meantime, he says he will review the traffic signal timing on Hancock Road.

“I’d feel safer driving knowing that we could make a couple lights and people weren’t scooting 60 mph to 65 mph to make a 45 mph zone,” she said.
