ST. LOUIS — Students, teachers and staff at Bierbaum Elementary Tuesday were the first to see St. Louis County Public Library’s (SLCL) Cardinals-themed bookmobile.
The new bookmobile, in partnership with Cardinals Care and SLCL, has a colorful design that celebrates baseball and literacy. Limited-edition Cardinals library cards also were announced during the event.
A total of 5,000 books are located inside for children to explore and checkout, along with skylights, extended WIFI access and removable seating for visitors. The ADA accessible bookmobile also includes 21-foot awnings for outdoor access and activities.
“Access to engaging books is critical for building strong literacy skills, which are the foundation of academic success,” said Dr. Paul Morris, principal of Bierbaum Elementary School.
“This partnership not only celebrates our love for the Cardinals but also reinforces the importance of reading in unlocking our students’ potential.”
The bookmobile also has a shelf of books dedicated to the Cardinals, which were selected by Cardinals players, alumni and team mascot Fredbird.
Cardinals Care donated $200,000 for the new bookmobile, which supports SLCL’s effort to replace its bookmobile fleet.
“The Cardinals have been a longtime supporter of the Library,” said Kristen Sorth, St. Louis County Library director & CEO.
“Their investment in literacy has made a real impact on our community. Sponsoring a new bookmobile continues that legacy and will help open up a world of discovery and enjoyment for students for years to come.”
Great Southern Bank, Emerson and the James S. McDonnell Family Foundation also have made donations to sponsor new bookmobiles. Those are set to be unveiled in late 2024 and 2025.
Special guests who attended the unveiling were Fredbird and former Cardinals pitcher Brad Thompson, in addition to officials from SLCL and Cardinals Care.
SLCL’s four school bookmobiles visit more than 50 public and private schools throughout 11 school districts in St. Louis County.
Last year, 355,965 items were checked out by students thanks to the bookmobiles and more than 8,000 new library cards were issued.
Bookmobiles made 648 visits to schools and provided service to more than 127,800 children.
SLCL has seen an increase each year in the number of school districts and sites requesting bookmobile service.
