ST. LOUIS—The 2025 campaign cycle is officially underway, as filing opened Monday for the March primary in the city of St. Louis. Voters will decide primaries for Mayor, Comptroller, and members of the Board of Aldermen serving in odd-numbered wards.
As expected, Mayor Tishaura Jones filed for re-election to a second term. 8th ward Alderwoman Cara Spencer also filed for the contest as did Recorder of Deeds Michael Butler.
Also, as expected, State Rep. Donna Baringer filed to run for Comptroller, against the incumbent Darlene Green. Green did not file on the first day but has said she will seek another term in the post.
In the aldermanic races, the most activity came in ward 3, where the incumbent, Shane Cohn was joined by Dallas Adams and Inez Bordeaux.
Filing ends January 3.
Under the city’s approval voting system, voters can select as many candidates as they want in a given race. The top two candidates will advance to the April 8 general election.
Earlier this month, voters statewide approved a constitutional amendment that bans ranked choice voting, but exempts the approval voting system used in St. Louis.
