ST. LOUIS–Last week, the Battlehawks thanked AJ McCarron on social media as they released him but the former Saint Louis quarterback sounded off on the McReady and Siskey podcast Monday.
McCarron said he was surprised when he found out about his release from his son, Trip, who saw it on instagram.
Repeatedly during the podcast, he stated he loves Saint Louis and the fans made games feel similar to his experience as Alabama’s quarterback in college. He believes it’s sad the NFL got taken away from St. Louis.
McCarron plans to play in the UFL this year and hopes to face Coach Becht twice.
In eight games with the Battlehawks 2024 UFL season, McCarron scored 110 points through 15 passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown. He ran for 87 yards, passed for 1,581 yards and only threw only four interceptions. His 94.6 passer rating ranked third in the UFL among passers with at least 50 pass attempts.
McCarron also played in the XFL in 2023 for the Battlehawks where he took home XFL’s most valuable player award. McCarron scored 24 passing touchdowns to six interceptions and one rushing touchdown. He had 2,150 passing yards and 100 rushing yards through nine games and a 108.4 quarterback rating.
As for St. Louis, the only quarterback they 100% for sure have the player rights to is their first-round pick in the 2024 college draft, Chevan Cordeiro from the San Jose State University. Cordeiro is currently not rostered by the NFL after a brief stint in rookie camp with the Seattle Seahawks. In his last collegiate season with the Spartans, he threw for 2,773 yards, 20 touchdowns to only four interceptions.
During a zoom with Battlehawks head coach Anthony Becht, he said he was looking at guys who are likely going to be late camp cuts.
