CHESTERFIELD, Mo. — The Butterfly House in Chesterfield reopened Wednesday after being closed for two weeks due to flood damage.

The heavy rain and severe storms on Nov. 5 flooded the facility’s basement in several feet of water, according to a press release.

No animals or people were injured or exposed to the floodwaters. While the main level of the Butterfly House was not affected, some building systems required repairs before reopening to the public.

During the closure period, staff took proactive steps to care for the animals at the facility and partnered with the Saint Louis Zoo to transfer animals in their care.

“Equipment can be replaced and repaired, but our priority is the welfare of our animals and plants,” said Butterfly House Director Jennifer Mullix.

“We are grateful that the Saint Louis Zoo could re-home our chrysalid shipment. Seeing our staff work so hard to get us back up and running, before Enchanted Fairy Gardens, has been incredible.”

The Butterfly House will open its doors two extra days in December for visitors. Regular admission applies for Bonus Mondays on Dec. 23 and Dec. 30.

Special events also will take place during the holiday season.

From Nov. 29 through Jan. 5, the Tropical Conservatory will feature a fair garden among the hundreds of butterflies. Visiting hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It’s included in the regular admission price.

Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus will be at the Butterfly House from Dec. 13-15 and Dec. 20-22 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Visitors can have their photo taken with Santa, enjoy a Pasta House dinner, create holiday crafts, enjoy cocoa with Mrs. Claus and take a nightly stroll inside the Tropical Conservatory.

Children two and under are free. To register, visit the Butterfly House website.
