The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is warning county residents to be aware of a new phone scam permeating the community.
The scam is a common one. The scammer will call a victim and claim the victim has a warrant out for their arrest and must pay a fee or else be immediately arrested. It's a common scam that plagues communities across the country.
But now, scammers are telling the victims to go to their nearest Walmart Money Center. Once there, the scammer will email or text a fraudulent barcode. If the barcode is scanned at the Money Center, the money will go directly to the scammer.
Police agencies will never call you to say you have a warrant out for your arrest and you'll never be asked to pay an outstanding warrant through payment centers, with gift cards or wire transfers.
