The U.S. Department of Education has recognized hundreds of schools as National Blue Ribbon School, including two in the Kansas City area.

Schools can send in an application for a chance to be awarded the title. Each application focuses on various aspect of the school, including leadership, family, programs and culture. This year, most of the selected schools were public elementary schools.

The eight Missouri schools that were selected were:

  • Bristol Elementary in St. Louis
  • Meramec Elementary in Clayton
  • Metro Academic and Classical High School in St. Louis
  • Oakwood Elementary in Hannibal
  • Ralph M. Captain Elementary in Clayton
  • Richland Elementary in Essex
  • Voy Spears, Jr. Elementary in Lee's Summit
  • Williams Yates Elementary in Independence
