ST. LOUIS — Wednesday marks the 23rd year since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Ceremonies, remembrances and other events to honor the fallen and survivors are taking place throughout the St. Louis region.

Remembrance ceremony and walk

A ceremony at the city of O’Fallon’s Sept. 11 memorial will start at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, followed by a one-mile walk at 9 a.m.

Participants can pick up photos and stories of the fallen first responders prior to the start of the walk.

Jefferson Barracks

Volunteers are invited to clean headstones Wednesday at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery starting at 9:30 a.m.

Memorial Walkway of Southern Illinois

The annual Moment of Remembrance Ceremony is Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. located at Fire House 4 in Belleville.

The annual ceremony honors those who died and those who came to help and rescue the victims. The memorial features a walkway and timeline of events, a survivor tree seedling, a tribute to the heroes of Flight 93 and a World Trade Center artifact.

The event is in partnership with the city of Belleville and the Sept. 11 Memorial Walkway of Southern Illinois committee.

Flags of Valor display and ceremony

The city of Manchester’s inaugural “Flags of Valor – Manchester Remembers 9/11” display is taking place at Margaret A. Stoecker Park from Sept. 9-15.

Paying tribute to the 412 First Responders who made the ultimate sacrifice, the display includes each of their photos and a flag, in addition to a special flag that recognizes the 350 first responders who have since died from their injuries.

There also are six large boards that feature photos and information on the civilian victims of the attacks.

A Remembrance Ceremony will take place Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Stoecker Park. The ceremony will feature Krista Salvatore who survived by walking down the stairs as first responders ascended to danger.

There also will be a Memorial Table Ceremony and music.

Freedom walk/run

A free community run/walk to honor the Sept. 11 victims, veterans and troops serving overseas will take place Wednesday at the VFW Post 4105 in Florissant.

The national anthem will play at 7:30 p.m. with the walk/run to follow. The VFW will provide free stick flags, in addition to complimentary water. No sign ups necessary.
