ST. LOUIS — Dogs are the most popular pet in the nation and a new study by Forbes Advisor has revealed each state’s favorite breed.

Missourians favor Australian shepherds. The breed was ranked at the top in nine other states, such as Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, Indiana, Montana, New York and Virginia, according to the study.

A total of 10,000 dog owners across the nation were surveyed by Forbes Advisor to determine which breeds ranked the highest.

The American Bulldog also is a popular breed in Missouri and ranked at the top in Connecticut, Illinois, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Utah and West Virginia, according to the study.

In the most populated states, including California, Florida and Texas, Bernese Mountain dogs are the favorite.

While the American Kennel Club has named French bulldogs as the “Most Popular Breed” by the AKC, the survey showed this breed was not selected as the favorite breed in any individual state.

Australian shepherds, German shepherds, labrador retrievers, Bernese mountain dogs, golden retrievers and boxers are among America’s favorite dog breeds that are medium to large sized dogs, according to the study.

Havanese, Pembroke Welsh corgis and miniature schnauzers are among America’s least-favored dog breeds that stand no taller than 14 inches.

Three of the least-favored dog breeds in America are small dogs, typically standing no taller than 14 inches.

Australian shepherds and German shepherds were ranked in the top five favorite dog breeds.

Approximately one-third of Americans said they got their dogs from a breeder followed by a shelter.
