ST. LOUIS — A new globally inspired barbecue restaurant is set to open next month at City Foundry.
Expat BBQ is a multi-story, 16,000-square-foot restaurant that incorporates international barbecue flavors with American techniques, according to a press release.
“It’s what it would taste like if an American chef cooked barbeque in different countries around the world, adapting their recipes to utilize local spices and ingredients, such as the pomegranate molasses we use on our lamb shoulder, or the Chinese rice wine and fermented black bean paste we use on our St. Louis-style ribs,” said executive chef Gerard Craft, James Beard award winner, and owner of Niche Food Group.
Expat BBQ’s grand opening is set for Thursday, Sept. 12. For eager customers, there will be limited dinner reservations made available on Tock in the first floor dining room, beginning Friday, Aug. 30 through Wednesday, Sept. 11 from 5-10 p.m.
The restaurant is located on the south side of Foundry Way with an entrance east of City Foundry’s Food Hall. Customers will notice animal kingdom design elements with vibrant, pastel colors featured throughout the three floors.
Guests on the first floor will be greeted by an eclectic curtain with a jungle print, a built-in eight seat bar, a 120-person capacity dining room and three concave dining nooks, with one intended for large dining parties of up to 25 people, according to the press release.
A glass door kitchen display also is on the first floor where people can view the culinary team in the butchery process and assembling dishes. Visitors can enjoy the smells from the smokers and grills as the pit area is located near the Food Hall entrance.
The mezzanine or second floor has an industrial theme with exposed pipes, a metal railway and a graffiti accent wall painted by Craft, according to the press release. This floor is for private events.
A pink, concrete elephant sculpture named Patty welcomes guests as they enter the third-floor terrace. This space is open for lunch and dinner and features a fast-casual bar area with kiosk food ordering and an outdoor patio and music stage.
“We had a lot of fun picking out every design detail, such as the wallpaper with monkeys smoking cigars to Patty, the giant pink elephant, who greets guests on the Terrace,” Craft said.
“We’ve built a Niche community at City Foundry STL. We want people to make a day out of visiting, whether it’s grabbing dinner at Expat and heading upstairs for cocktails, music and watching a soccer game on the upstairs patio to ending with a nightcap at None of the Above.”
Executive chef and St. Louis native Sam Nawrocki will head the kitchen with 15 years of experience under her belt.
“I’m excited about working with proteins, like lamb with our yogurt white barbeque sauce, that you typically don’t see in traditional American barbecue restaurants,” she said.
“From street-side jerk chicken wings in New York City to barbeque spaghetti in Memphis, you’ll see it reflected across the menu. Plus, we made sure to give a few nods to St. Louis, like our version of St. Louis' infamous mostaccioli dish, which we make with Pastaria’s mostaccioli, toss with smoked mushroom pomodoro, and top with bechamel and fontina.”
Regular hours of operations for the dining room are Sunday through Saturday from 5-10 p.m. with hours for the terrace on Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Friday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.
