With school back in session, students are crossing the street every day and drivers should know the law.

For both Missouri and Illinois, all drivers traveling in the same direction as a school bus must STOP when the bus loads and unloads students until the bus moves again.

On two-lane roads, oncoming traffic must stop as well.

Only in four-lane or wider highways, oncoming traffic isn’t required to stop. Local authorities still want drivers to drive cautiously.

Violators may see hundreds to thousands in fines, potential license suspension, or worse.

Many bus drivers have cameras on the bus or dash cams.

In Missouri, anyone that disobeys the laws may face a misdemeanor or a felony if they injure/kill someone.

Illinois State Police say, “the majority of children injured or killed in pupil transportation are injured outside the bus. Most are struck by motorists who fail to stop for the flashing red lights and extended stop arm.”
