ALTON, Ill. — One person died and a K9 officer was killed Thursday morning after Alton Police officers engaged in gunfire with a suspect at 6:05 a.m. in the 700 block of E. 6th Street, according to Illinois State Police (ISP). 

The suspect, who sustained injuries, was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Officer Allen Averbeck was struck and transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Alton Police Department's K9, Odin, was critically injured during the shootout and sent to a local veterinary hospital. He was later pronounced deceased. 

Alton Police Department requested the ISP division of Criminal Investigation Zone 6 to assist in the investigation.

ISP will investigate the use of force in the fatal shooting and turn over its findings to the Madison County’s Attorney’s office.
