ST. LOUIS — Following sixty minutes of one-sided football between the San Antonio Brahmas and Birmingham Stallions, the Stallions won the inaugural United Football League championship game in a shutout, 25-0.
It was the first shutout of the UFL season and the third spring championship win in a row for Coach Holtz and his Stallions. 27,396 attended the championship game in person while last week’s game between the Battlehawks and Brahmas eclipsed 30,000, as did all the Battlehawks’ home games.
Fans saw the Stallions take the lead right before halftime and cruised on for the win. Former NFL Quarterback Tom Brady presented the UFL Championship most valuable player award to Stallions’ QB Adrian Gonzalez.
San Antonio won the coin toss and moved the ball briefly before punting away. For much of the first half, it was a defense slugfest with a few forced fumbles and only one score. Stallions' defensive lineman Kyahva Tezino had nine tackles and forced two fumbles in a dominating defensive effort.
It wasn’t until 2:24 left in the second quarter that either team made it across midfield and that was Stallions’ running back Ricky Person rumbling for 44 yards, the longest play of the game. Five plays later with 50 seconds left in the first half, Gary Jennings caught a short pass in the flat from UFL regular season MVP Adrian Martinez and forced his way into the endzone for the lead. Amari Rodgers caught a short pass in the flat to convert for an extra two points. Stallions led 8-0 at halftime.
The second half had not started any better for the Brahmas who saw the Stallions march right down the field ending with a Martinez 11-yard touchdown run, 16-0. The Brahmas’ first possession ended quickly with a fumble recovered by the Stallions. A few plays later fourth and goal Martinez scored his second rushing touchdown of the game. Stallions would add a field goal in the fourth.
With the first UFL season in the history books, the players are hopful for NFL opportunities in training camps. For athletes and players who aren’t rostered by the NFL and hope to be drafted into the UFL, July begins with multiple UFL showcases over the next few months. Showcases are opportunities for perspective players to exhibit their skills in front of UFL coaches in hopes of being added to the UFL draft pool. The first showcase will be right here in St. Louis on July 12. For more information, click here.
