ST. LOUIS — There were 10 shootings in the city of St. Louis over the weekend that resulted in 17 injured, three of which have died, according to St. Louis Metropolitan Police Commissioner Robert Tracy.

In a press conference Monday, Tracy said none of the shootings appear to be connected.

The latest shooting was Sunday night at the Playground Bar and Grill where six people were shot.

Of those who were injured, two were convicted felons and two others were known gang members.

“We’ve seen time and time again, guns in the hands of convicted felons,” Tracy said. “We need to hold them accountable.”

He said more than 100 shell casings were at the scene.

SLMPD is working with the stakeholders at Playground Bar and Grill to address issues as other incidents have happened there, according to Tracy.

There have been 19 calls for service to the area so far this year. The investigation is ongoing.

Police also are investigating a shooting that happened on Washington Avenue where the suspect and victim are both from Branson. Tracy said SLMPD is working with Branson Police.

Two other homicides took place at Kingshighway and Pennsylvania Avenue. Tracy said the police have “very good leads” on the investigations.

Since Friday, 36 guns have been submitted to SLMPD’s crime lab. Tracy said four guns were seized during a search warrant and two others were recovered by officers where two people were shooting at each other from their vehicles at North Market and Broadway.

“Our officers are out there and they’re doing a good job,” Tracy said.

He mentioned 400 people with guns have been arrested so far this year and 1,000 firearms have been seized.

Summer

Tracy said SLMPD is prepared for the summer operating at 880 officers with patrols across the city, the department’s approved over-time and competitive secondary shifts.

He mentioned 28 people are currently in training, bringing the total to 908 officers.

The budget allows for roughly 1,224 officers and Tracy said he would be comfortable with having 1,220 officers in the department.

Tracy said the number of officers will increase with the ongoing recruitment marketing campaigns and the raise SLMPD officers received last year.

Crime stats

So far this year, there are 74 homicides, compared to a total of 75 in 2023. There were 71 homicides in 2022 and 78 in 2021, according to Tracy.

Homicide clearance,, or cases closed, last year finished over 70%, which is higher than the national average, Tracy said. So far this year, the homicide clearance is 61%, which also is higher than the national average.

The “Save Lives Now” initiative launched last month, which aims to reduce the number of homicides in the region by 20%, Tracy said.

He added that crime is down 21% compared to this time last year.

“We have a comprehensive plan,” Tracy said. “We’re very flexible to try to make sure we stay ahead of the patterns and trends.”

He mentioned recent instances where officers were interrupted shootings.

Tracy said violence will not be tolerated.

“We will not tolerate gang violence. We will not tolerate gun violence,” he said. “We’re going to use everything in our power to make sure that we bring people to justice.”

Tracy talked about how SLMPD leverages technology and works with Mayor Jones’ administration, the Office of Violence Prevention, the Behavioral Health Bureau and faith-based organizations.
