ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. — A lockdown has been lifted at Scott Air Force Base after officials said they discovered what they thought was a suspicious package containing a possible explosive device Wednesday morning during a routine check. 

The package was discovered while conducting a routine explosive sweep of a vehicle at the Commercial Vehicle Inspection Gate, according to a press release. St. Clair police and Explosive Ordnance Disposal personnel responded to the scene.

Nearby residents were notified to shelter in place until the lockdown was lifted. 

No explosive device was found. 

The investigation is ongoing by police.
