ST. LOUIS — St. Louis native and Emmy award-winning actor Jon Hamm will deliver the spring commence address at St. Louis University, officials announced Friday.
The ceremony is set for Saturday, May 18, at 9 a.m. in Chaifetz Arena. The event will be live-streamed online and archived on SLU’s YouTube channel, according to a press release.
Hamm attended John Burroughs School in Ladue, where he participated on the football, baseball and swim teams, according to the press release. He then attended the University of Missouri and received his Bachelor of Arts in English.
Before moving to Hollywood, Hamm taught acting at his alma mater to eighth graders.
In addition to the commencement, Hamm will receive an honorary degree along with three other SLU alums, including Fr. P. Marie Joseph Christie, S.J. (CSB ’99) and Susan E. Klepper, Ph.D. (Doisy ’66) and William M. Klepper, Ph.D. (Arts and Sciences ’66).
Hamm has won acclaim for his role as advertising executive Don Draper on the award-winning drama “Mad Men,” including an Emmy Award for Outstanding Actor in 2011, Golden Globe Awards in 2016 and 2008, Television Critics Association Awards in 2011 and 2015, a Critics' Choice Television Award in 2011, in addition to multiple Screen Actors Guild nominations, according to the press release.
Hamm also has appeared in comedies such as the Emmy-winning comedy, “30 Rock,” from 2009-2012 earned him three Emmy nominations for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series. He additionally starred in “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” alongside St. Louis native and actress Ellie Kemper on Netflix.
Besides his career in acting, Hamm has helped local organizations such the St. Louis County Library Foundation and St. Louis Actor’s Studio Small Professional Theater Sustainment Fund to raise money during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hamm also has been a supporter of numerous charities ,including the Alzheimer's Association, Cancer Research Institute, Stand Up To Cancer and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
