ST. LOUIS— Lion’s Choice is putting a new twist on the original roast beef sandwich that not only gained customer approval Tuesday, but got the stamp of approval from a co-founder of the St. Louis restaurant chain.
The reboot of the famous original roast beef sandwich is called The Remix. It’s made with the same premium, 100% lean top-round roast beef, famous seasoning, two slices of Swiss cheese with new garlic aioli sauce between two pieces of buttered Texas toast.
The new sandwich will be available at all Lion’s Choice locations April 9.
On Tuesday, a preview event was held at the Hanley Road location where many enjoyed the new sandwich, including Marv Gibbs, one of the founders of Lion’s Choice.
He said the new roast beef sandwich is “even a little better” than the original.
“It has my approval,” Gibbs said. “I was in seventh heaven again.”
Customer Daryl Camballa said the new sandwich is pretty good.
“The roast beef’s really tender. The Texas toast is nice, buttery and crispy,” he said. “And the sauces they have are fire.”
Lion’s Choice CEO Fred Burmer eats at a restaurant roughly twice a week and said he got to a point where he became bored eating the same original sandwich.
After learning about an employee experimenting with new cheeses, sauces and breads, Burmer gave one a try.
“I just basically got the same sandwich that I was regularly getting, the roast beef with Swiss, and put it on Texas toast, and I couldn’t believe the difference in the texture, the flavor,” he said. “It just made such a big difference.”
After other employees weighed in, the garlic aioli sauce and two slices of Swiss cheese were added.
Burmer said he likes how the roast beef and the garlic aioli flavors go hand-in-hand.
“It just gives that roast beef that different flavor than it tasted on the other sandwiches,” he said. “If you’re already a die-hard Lion’s Choice customer, this gives you a little bit of variety, different texture, a different taste profile."
“People who try us for the first time, we want them to clearly see that this is a different and better roast beef sandwich than you can get anywhere.”
For regulars who prefer the original roast beef on a bun, Burmer said they can still order that as well.
Burmer spoke with first-time customers and long-time customers on Tuesday who sampled The Remix. Many told Burmer that The Remix be their new go-to sandwich.
The Remix has the same amount of roast beef as the large sandwich, which will be the same price as the large sandwich.
“It’s actually one of our best value sandwiches,” Burmer said.
He mentioned that Lion’s Choice will start to promote other staple items including the fries and custards.
“If you haven’t tried Lion’s Choice, you must try it,” Gibbs said.
The first Lion’s Choice opened in 1967 in Ballwin, Mo.
