ST. LOUIS—A Saint Louis University poll of likely voters indicates support for a proposed constitutional amendment to restore abortion rights in the state of Missouri.
A SLU/YouGov poll released Wednesday said 44% of voters would back the measure proposed by Missourians for Constitutional Freedom, which would legalize abortion until the point of fetal viability, while 37% were opposed. The survey of almost 900 voters had a margin of error of 3.74% with 19% undecided.
Backers of the amendment are still gathering petition signatures and face a May 5 deadline to collect 171,000 signatures. If the petitions are certified, it would be up to Gov. Mike Parson to decide when the measure would be on a ballot.
The same survey of general election voters suggests Republicans are likely to keep hold of the governor’s mansion in November even though a larger swath of the electorate appears to be unsure of who they’ll support in primaries.
If the election were held today, 52% of voters said they would choose a Republican, while 38% said they would choose a Democrat, with 8% unsure.
General election voters who said they would choose a Republican for governor were asked which candidate they would support, and Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft led the group at 28% followed by Lt. Gov. Mike Kehoe at 10%, State Sen. Bill Eigel at 8%, Joplin businessman Chris Wright at 3% and 49% not sure.
On the Democratic side, State Rep. Crystal Quade is on top at 21%, followed by Springfield businessman Mike Hamra at 5%, State Rep. Sarah Unsicker and Sheryl Gladney of St. Charles at 4%, with 66% unsure.
The Democratic party did not accept Unsicker’s filing fee and she has not indicated whether she plans to run as an independent candidate or sue the party to get on the ballot.
