ST. LOUIS—A contingent of up to 200 Missouri National Guard members are expected to depart Missouri for Texas sometime next week, as part of Gov. Mike Parson’s executive order sending resources to assist Texas’ Operation Lone Star.

Parson had previously announced the personnel would begin their mission March 10.

The first round of 11 Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers are already in Texas, where they are riding with Texas troopers on patrol, also in support of Operation Lone Star, the Texas border security effort that has drawn support from other Republican governors around the country.

The Missouri National Guard has so far not specificed the makeup of the manpower heading for Texas, where Parson has said they would help put up barriers. In response to Spectrum News questioning, the National Guard said Saturday it would include members from around the state. The Highway Patrol staff volunteered for the duty from Troops and divisions around the state. It was unclear if the National Guard members would all come from a single unit or would also involve a combined force.

Roughly 250 Missouri National Guard members are already working on a border security mission as part of a separate federal call-up.

This week, the Missouri House approved Gov. Parson’s $2.2 million supplemental budget request related to the executive order, which also includes replenishing the governor’s emergency response fund.

The executive order lasts for 90 days, and personnel will rotate in as needed. It could be extended if necessary.
