ST. LOUIS — New technology is revolutionizing the way elementary students participate in gym class at St. Louis Public Schools (SLPS).
Lü Systems technology has been installed at some SLPS elementary schools where students can play interactive dodgeball, basketball, follow along to exercise routines and more, according to Teron Sharp, SLPS athletic director.
The system includes a high definition laser projector, a movement detection camera, a powerful sound system and fully automated multi-colored lighting “to create immersive magical environments,” the company’s website states.
“I’m excited for it because it allows P.E. teachers to use technology in their lessons and usually, P.E. teachers are kind of left behind when it comes to technology,” Sharp said.
The new technology makes gym class more hands-on and fun, Sharp said, as opposed to teachers illustrating how to do stretches or warm-ups themselves.
With its many other immersive learning opportunities, Lü Systems can be used for other classes.
There was staff training over the summer at Washington Carver, and another staff training was held in January on the Lü Systems technology.
While some elementary schools are already using it, Sharp said about 20 other schools are waiting for the technology to be installed. The goal is for all elementary schools to have Lü Systems by April.
Sharp said the gym teachers are excited about the interactive technology.
“It gives them a different way of doing things,” she said.
