ST. LOUIS — A 22-year-old man has been charged in the deaths of a mother and daughter who were killed by a speeding driver Wednesday night in Downtown St. Louis.
Monte Henderson was charged with two counts of first-degree involuntary manslaughter and two counts of armed criminal action.
The incident happened at Olive and 18th streets around 12:30 a.m. The driver of a 2020 Jeep Cherokee was traveling eastbound on Olive Street, from Compton, at a high rate of speed and ran red lights, according to police.
The driver ran a red light on 18th Street and sideswiped the front end of a 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander that was traveling north on 18th Street.
After the collision, the 2020 Jeep Cherokee rotated clockwise and struck two pedestrians who were walking across Olive within the east crosswalk right-of-way, according to police.
The pedestrians were thrown to the north side of the sidewalk of Olive.
The Jeep Cherokee then struck the front end of a 2015 Mazda CX-5 in a T-bone collision as the Mazda was traveling west on Olive, approaching 18th Street, according to police.
The pedestrians were identified as 42-year-old Laticha Bracero and 21-year-old Alyssa Cordova, both of Chicago. Bracero was pronounced dead at the scene and Cordova was transported to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead, according to police.
A GoFundMe page says Bracero and Cordova were walking from the Drake concert when they were struck.
Bracero and Cordova came from a close, strong family in Chicago and both were inseparable and shared a bond, the GoFundMe page states.
Bracero was a dedicated mother, loving sister, niece and cousin. She was a hardworking supervisor at a bank. Cordova was a college student who worked part-time at Starbucks. She loved going to music concerts with her mom.
“The family is currently trying to bring them home and give them the best service possible with hopes to lay them to rest amongst other family members. The family is extremely devastated by this horrific tragedy,” the GoFundMe page states.
